The band released its first EP titled “JBT” in 2000. It consisted of four tracks that garnered significant radio play, especially the track “Pickapart”, which was put on high rotation. The same year, the band appeared at the East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival and has since then been appearing at the festival every year. The trio released its sophomore studio album “Three” in April 2001. The album produced hit single “Betterman” which charted at number five on the Triple J Hottest 100. The album entered the ARIA Charts at number 24 and won the ARIA music award for “Best Independent Release.”
Followed by the success of “Three” in Australia, the album was released in the US in 2002 on ATO Records and the band went on two US tours. The trio also supported John Mayer and the Dave Mathews Band and played at American festivals including the South by Southwest Festival and Bonnaroo Music Festival. This excessive touring across America and Australia earned the band a good reputation. The band’s first live album “Living 2001-2002” came out in February 2003. The album was certified platinum and debuted at number six on the ARIA Albums Chart.
The band released its third studio album “Sunrise Over Sea” on Jarrah Records. The album charted at number one on the ARIA Album Charts and was certified gold in the first week of its release. The single “Zebra” received significant airplay on radio and charted at number seven on the Triple J Hottest 100. It was the first song by the John Butler Trio to receive airplay on a commercial FM radio station in Australia. The song was declared to be the Song of the Year by the Australasian Performing Rights Association.
The band’s fourth album, “Grand National” hit the stores in March 2007 and climbed to number one on the ARIA Album Charts. The hit singles from the albums include “Better Than” and “Funky Tonight”. The band went on a five-city US tour which kicked off in Los Angeles. The band also performed at Live Earth’s Australian leg, The Tonight Show and Newport Folk Festival. In 2008, the trio performed at Lollapalooza and spent the summer touring with G. Love and Special Sauce.
2010 saw the release of their fifth studio album “April Uprising” which became the band’s third consecutive album to debut at number one on ARIA Album Charts. The lead single “One Way Road” charted at number fifteen while the second single “Close to You” charted at number 36. Followed by this, the band played live at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in June 2010. The album won the band the AIR Award for Most Popular Independent Artist and was nominated for two more ARIA Awards.
In February 2014, the band’s sixth studio album “Flesh & Blood” came out and climbed to number two on the ARIA Album Charts.
