Taylor was interested in music since a very young age. He learnt to play cello and then moved to learning guitar when he was only twelve years old. The influences on his guitar playing were from hymns and carols yet his technique to play was much like cello. This ginger picking style allowed him to develop and polish a distinctive manner of creating music that also continued into his professional music career. During his school years, he met another aspiring teenage guitarist Danny Kortchmar and the two started playing together. Taylor wrote his first song on guitar at the age of fourteen and went on to quickly gain a name for having a natural sense of phrasing every syllable beautifully. His first formal association with a music act came when he joined his brother’s band, The Fabulous Corsairs, as an electric guitarist. One of his songs, Cha Cha Blues, was also featured in one of the band’s singles. Taylor did not remain with the band for long, but he gained valuable experience and exposure which would later help him in his solo career.
Taylor reunited with Kortchmar and formed a band of his own, named The Flying Machine. The other members included Joel O’Brien as the drummer and Zachary Weiner as the bassist. The quartet performed songs written by Taylor, which incorporated a wide range of emotions. By 1966, the group was a regular in local arenas of New York City. It garnered some success but proved to be a short lived venture and broke up in the following year. In 1968, Taylor finally decided to put his talents in a solo career and released his debut solo album “James Taylor”. The album received public attention but it was not until another year that Taylor got to make his debut performance at the Troubadour nightclub.
Taylor’s sophomore album titled, “Sweet Baby James,” was released in 1970 and became a smashing hit. One of its singles, Fire and Rain, peaked at number five on the charts and soon after, the album also rose to the same level. This not only paved way for future successes for the star but also reignited fans’ interest in his debut album which reached the charts once again. Since then James Taylor has kept his performances entertaining and fan following intact. So far, he has sixteen studio albums in his repertoire in addition to several other singles that allow him to keep his audiences on their feet throughout his performances.
In his career spanning almost five decades of artistic triumphs, Taylor has carved an unshakable stature for himself in the music world. The past few years have been notable for his creative virtuosity as well as the recognitions for his incredible works. In 2011, he was awarded the prestigious National Medal of Arts by the American President and the following year he received the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government. His list of accolades extends far beyond with multiple other awards and honors boasting of his talents. Taylor is also a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. His warm baritone and autobiographical lyrics, coupled with his distinguished guitar tunes have made him enduringly popular. This is your chance to watch this remarkable star live on stage.
