Beginnings of a notable career
Jacob Whitesides hails from a humble background in Knoxville, Tennessee. He learnt the guitar at an early age and after working on his vocal skills for a while, began posting videos on YouTube. Encouraged by the praise he received for his covers, he soon shared his original songs with the YouTube community as well. Breaking into the contemporary pop rock scene is not an easy task, especially for young singers. This talented singer-songwriter however slowly gained traction and eventually emerged as a force to reckon with in the pop industry.
Jacob initially garnered an online following by playing cover versions of notable songs like John Legend’s “All of Me” and Plain White T’s “Hey There Delilah,” among others. By his early teens, he had already been playing shows around Knoxville.
In 2012, he earned even more attention after he featured on the second season of Fox Network’s “The X Factor,” although he only made it through the first cut. His online following got another substantial boost after one of his fans tweeted his cover version of the One Direction song “One Thing,” which received endorsement from 1D member, Liam Payne. The Tennessee teenager independently released his debut effort, 3 AM: The EP in 2014. The five-track album featured covers of songs by John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Plain White T’s and John Legend. It peaked at number two on the Top Independent Albums chart.
A year later, he delivered his sophomore effort, A Piece of Me, which only contained original material. His heartfelt lyrics and unique emotive brand of acoustic pop feature prominently in this six-track album. The album reached third place on the Top Independent Albums chart and at number one on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart.
