About Hem

The first album of the band Rabbit Songs featured opening lines from many lullabies sung by Sally Ellyson for a friend’s infant son including the lullaby Blow The Moon Out. The album was widely acclaimed in the United States Press and received enthusiastic positive reviews and glowing praise. Grace, comfort, quiet persistence radiated from every song and the album was described as “effortlessly timeless appeal” by Allmusic.
The band released its second album Eveningland in late 2004 with Rounder Records. The album was filled with finally etched folk tunes adding orchestral texture that enhanced the song’s melancholy resonance. The album was another success for the band garnering fame not only in the United States but also overseas. Pitchfork Media and the international Media outlets like BBC gave positive reviews about the album. Their third album No Word From Tom was a flexible citified mix of country and folk. The band released its fourth album Funnel Cloud in 2006. The album was recorded with a 21-piece orchestra and the song Not California was featured on NPR’s “All Songs Considered”. The album takes on the themes of fear and innocence with songs of romantic longing and wistful reflection.  Their fifth album Departure And Farewell with Waveland Records was released in April 2013 featuring Tourniquet that has a beautifully conceived and animated video.
Hem got a career breakthrough with the song Half-Acre in 2006. It was featured in a television commercial that increased the band’s popularity significantly making them known to millions of people. In 2007, the band received another career boost when they played for Boston Pops’ annual event Edgefest with Boston Pops at Symphony Hall. They also provided music for Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, a Public Theatre Production at the Delacorte Theatre in 2009.
