About Eliane Elias

Eliane Elias started playing the piano at seven, got formal training and by the time she turned seventeen, she was already touring North America with the music great, Toquinho. She then moved to NY and joined the jazz ensemble Steps Ahead with whom she recorded an album in 1983. She was part of several joint ventures which included singing duets with Herbie Hancock, a collaboration that earned a Grammy nomination. She also joined hands with the trumpeter Randy Brecker, who she later married and have a daughter with. For her astounding music, Elias was named “Best New Talent” in 1988 by Jazziz Magazine.
Elias has continuously explored two different musical streams through her solo recordings as well as her live performances. In 1993 she became one of the very few artists to release classical and jazz albums simultaneously. Eliane Elias is also known for her incredible vocals and songwriting. So far the diva has released 20 solo albums, making her debut with Illusions in 1986. She followed it with Cross Currents, So Far So Close, Eliane Elias Plays Jobim, A Long Story and Fantasia in 1992. Until 1994 she continued to release albums without any break, waited for a year and in 1996 treated her fans with ‘The Three Americas’.  
Her collaborative works have also brought her great fame and acclaim. Her record with Herbie Hancock released in 1995 titled “Solos and Duets” received a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Jazz Instrumental Video. Critics lauded their joint effort and it was named “a landmark in piano duo history.” In 2000, a Latin Jazz documentary “Calle 54” was released featuring Elias among other artists. Eliane appeared for the first time on Piano Jazz, a radio program by Marian McPartland in 2002. Eliane Elias is much recognized for her unique yet instantly recognizable musical style that mixes her sensuous Brazilian roots, appealing voice with her inspiring instrumental classical, jazz as well as her compositional skills. Her record “The Three Americas” was elected as Best Jazz Album in Downbeat Readers Poll in 1997. Eliane has been honored with titles like, Best Jazz Pianist, Best Composer, Musician of the Year and Best Female Vocalist. Apart from working as a Jazz pianist, Eliane also worked on the classical music recording with the opera sensation, Denyce Graves.
In 2002 Eliane Elias came up with an album “Kissed by Nature”, under the RCA Music Group/Bluebird label that included her original compositions. “Dreamer”, released in 2004 was her next recording for the label. It won a Gold Disc Award and was selected as the “Best Vocal Album” in Japan. It went to number three on the Pop Charts in France and number four on the U.S. Billboard charts.
