Bonnie Raitt was born on 8th November, 1949 to artistic parents. Her father was a famous star on Broadway whereas her mother was a pianist. Bonnie started to play guitar when she was twelve years old and chose to learn the bottleneck technique of guitar-playing. She went to the Radcliffe College, Harvard for her freshman year where she met Dick Waterman a famous blues manager. They soon became very good friends so when Waterman moved to Philadelphia, Bonnie went with him and that move changed her world.
Soon afterwards Bonnie was playing rhythm and blues and folk in the local Boston music clubs alongside some of the biggest names in blues like Mississippi Fred McDowell, Sippie Wallace and Howlin’ Wolf. She was introduced to these legends by Waterman and working with them opened her eyes to the power of music. In 1970, while doing a gig in New York she was spotted by a correspondent from the Newsweek magazine. He was so impressed by what he saw that he started talking about Bonnie and soon a lot of major record labels were sending their people to see her play. She was made a lot of offers which eventually led her to signing a contract with the Warner Bros in 1970 that was to launch her career in mainstream music.
Bonnie released her eponymously titled debut album in 1971. That album got a lot of praise from critics for Bonnie’s songs constructions, amazing vocals and her guitar playing skills especially considering the fact she was one of the very few women who were playing bottleneck at that time. She released her next album Give It Up the following year and that was an even better attempt than her debut album. Give It Up contained tracks from people like Eric Kaz and Jackson Browne to go with various R&B tracks. It also had three Bonnie Raitt originals. Takin’ My Time was released in 1973 once again to a lot of critical acclaim everywhere.
Bonnie Raitt’s Sweet Forgiveness turned out to be her first major commercial success. The track Runaway was the album’s biggest hit that did quite well on various charts. Her next works like The Glow and Green Light one again received a lot of critical acclaim but the response from fans was mixed. All that however changed when she released Nick of Time in 1989. The album became a rage and topped charts around the country. The success of the album earned Bonnie Raitt multiple Grammys and turned her into a phenomenon. Three more Grammys followed with release and subsequent success of her next album Luck of the Draw that has sold well over eight million copies in the U.S. only. She followed that up with Longing In Their Hearts in 1994 and the album once again won her two Grammy awards. The album just like Luck of the Draw turned out to be multi-platinum and earned Bonnie the success her talents had always deserved. Fans started buying Bonnie Raitt tickets and selling out arenas everywhere she went on tour and in turn she amazed them with her amazing performances as a thank you gesture.
