They began writing songs after school and mainly practiced Progressive Rock before they realized their love for roots rock. Steve Johnson, the drummer, was a worker of a record store in his hometown and was approached by Brittany Howard and Zac Cockrell inviting him to become a part of their band. He complied and the three went to get a record deal with the "Clearwave Recording Studio". Impressed by the demo, Heath Fogg joined the band as a guitarist.

About Alabama Shakes

While they working on their own songs, they did covers of famous songs by AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and James Brown. They came up with these covers because they still did not have enough material to play a 45 minute long set. At first, they used the name "The Shakes", but to avoid confusion with other local bands that had similar names, they added Alabama to the tile making themselves "The Alabama Shakes". In September 2011, they released an EP consisting of four songs, called the "Alabama Shakes". This attracted many and the band received media attention and they even received appraisal on NPR. They were then invited to perform at the "CMJ Music Marathon" in New York. Their performance at CMJ was a big success and they caught the eye of Jon Parales from The New York Times.
