Starting in Athens, Alabama in 2009, Alabama Shakes is a rock band which comprises of Brittany Heart who is the guitar player and lead singer, Heath Fogg, another guitarist, drummer Steve Johnson, bassist Zac Cockrell, and on keyboards Ben Tanner. The band received many nominations this year at the 2013 Grammy Awards for Best New Artist, Best Rock Performance and Best Recording Package for their first album, "Boys and Girls". Brittany Howard and fellow band member Zac Cockrell both attended the "East Limestone High School" and soon found that they shared the same taste in music. They began writing songs after school and mainly practiced Progressive Rock before they realized their love for roots rock. Steve Johnson, the drummer, was a worker of a record store in his hometown and was approached by Brittany Howard and Zac Cockrell inviting him to become a part of their band. He complied and the three went to get a record deal with the "Clearwave Recording Studio". Impressed by the demo, Heath Fogg joined the band as a guitarist.

While they working on their own songs, they did covers of famous songs by AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and James Brown. They came up with these covers because they still did not have enough material to play a 45 minute long set. At first, they used the name "The Shakes", but to avoid confusion with other local bands that had similar names, they added Alabama to the tile making themselves "The Alabama Shakes". In September 2011, they released an EP consisting of four songs, called the "Alabama Shakes". This attracted many and the band received media attention and they even received appraisal on NPR. They were then invited to perform at the "CMJ Music Marathon" in New York. Their performance at CMJ was a big success and they caught the eye of Jon Parales from The New York Times. He appreciated Brittany Howard on her vocals and comparisons of her voice were made to Janis Joplin. He praised the band for their overall performance and complimented them in their energy. Howard’s presentation in lyrics is very clear. Their song "You Ain’t Alone" was featured in a commercial for "Zales Jewelry".
In the span of one year, they went from nothing to playing at huge venues such as the famous Ryman Auditorium in Tennessee and in Los Angeles, the Music Box Theatre and the Troubadour. They finally received a record deal from "Rough Trade Records" in November 2011 in the UK and the ATO records in the US. They received a nomination for "Best Live Performance" the same year. Jack White only recently helped them to release some singles. Their album, "Boys and Girls" went online for streaming on 1st April 2012. Next month, they performed a set for their first ever night at "2012 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival" also playing at the Newport Folk Festival after that. They made their first appearance on U.S national television on 7th February 2012 and played theory debut song ‘Hold On’ followed by an online version of " I Ain’t the Same". They appeared on "Late Show with David Letterman" and performed on his birthday special. In the UK they made their first appearance on television on the show "Later…with Jools Holland" performing "Hang Loose" and "Hold On". They were also featured on the late night television show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on 14th August 2012. They played at the ‘Bestival’ in September 2012 on Isle Wight alongside Stevie Wonder and The xx. In February 2013, they were featured in "Austin City Limits" and played "You Ain’t Alone", "On Your Way", "I Ain’t the Same", and "Always right". They also made an appearance on Saturday Night Live where they played "Always Right" and "Hold On". They are scheduled to perform to the Bottle Rock Napa Valley music festival in May 2013.
They have earned themselves the number one position on the UK record store charts and a peak of number 6 on the US Billboard 200. Their single "Hold On" has earned it to the Gold Certification on the Canadian Charts. They have always made two music videos in 2012 of their songs "Hold On and "I Ain’t the Same".
