A Silent Film
Hailing from the city of Oxford, the English ensemble came into existence in 2005. It currently consists of band members Robert Stevenson singing the lead vocals, Karl Bareham playing the guitar, Spencer Walker on drums and Ali Hussain handling the bass. Their music has been compared to that of The Killers, Snow Patrol and Coldplay and is enjoyed by fans of different ages. At the time of the group’s formation it consisted of members, Walker, Stevenson and Bareham who were a part of the alternative ensemble, Shouting Myke. Shouting Myke was formed by the three members in 2000 and performed locally till the next five years, until its dismemberment in 2005. The three musicians went onto play alongside Steve Meyer-Rassow and Benn Clarke in a lineup that would later be called A Silent Film. Within a year’s time, Rassow and Clarke were seen moving onto other groups and opportunities and were replaced by Ali Hussain. The band’s name was kept after the lead vocalist Stevenson wished to name it as reference to Charlie Chaplin’s silent motion pictures.
With the formation of the band, the five members started working on fresh ideas almost immediately. They came forward with a single two years later that was named “The Projectionist”. The band performed this song on BBC’s Introducing Stage in the same year, after which they started writing music for their debut studio album. Releasing a year later in 2008, the album was named “The City That Sleeps”. It came out through Xtra Mile Recordings, being produced by talent hunter Sam Williams.
The record provided fans with eleven tracks including the number one hit single “You Will Leave a Mark”. Not only has the single been mentioned in the “Hottest Downloads’ Chart” published by the Sunday Times Culture Magazine, the song also became the most downloaded hit on the Portuguese Singles Chart. With such successes, A Silent Film embarked on tours throughout Portugal and UK where they performed alongside artists such as Scouting for Girls, OneRepublic, the Temper Trap, the Smashing Pumpkins, Blue October and Fitz & the Tantrums.
Within a year’s time “You Will Leave a Mark” was mentioned in the iTunes Discovery Downloads list with over one hundred and ten thousand downloads recorded to date.
