Born in Bronx and raised in the suburb of Hicksville, New York, Billy Joel began to develop his interest in music by learning the piano. His father being a classical pianist made Joel want to perfect the instrument as well. He started taking piano lessons at a very young age under the guidance of the musician, Timothy Ford, American pianist, Morton Estrin and of course his father, Howard Joel. While still in high school, Billy Joel played at a local piano bar and due to low attendance in school, he discontinued his studies and went on to pursue a career in music. He cites The Beatles as one of his biggest influences to date. Billy Joel was soon hired by the band, The Echoes as a pianist. He worked alongside the group for a brief period of time and later joined another band called the Hassles. Together, they released a few albums and singles but couldn’t click with the audience the way they were expecting to. By the early 70s, Billy was done with joint ventures and finally went on to pursue a solo career in music. By 1971, he was out with his debut album, Cold Spring Harbor which played a major role in earning him a prominent spot in the industry.
With the release of his second studio album, Piano Man, Billy Joel instantly hit the international market and earned immediate fame and success. The record received a Gold certification in Canada and 4x Platinum in the US. Songs like, “The Ballad of Billy the Kid,” “Piano Man” and “Travelin’ Prayer” turned out to be the prominent ones one of them receiving a Gold certification as well. Following its success, Billy Joel released another album titled, Streetlife Serenaden which again received a Platinum status in the US producing a hit single called, “The Entertainer.” Some of his other albums that were a worldwide success include 52nd Street, The Stranger, Storm Front and River of Dreams. To date, Billy Joel has released 13 studio albums and all of his musical compilations have turned out to be a success both musically and lyrically. A critic from the Telegraph has described his music by saying, “his songs are unabashedly populist, they get up in your face with cocky melodies, FM production and blaring New York brass.”
To date, Billy Joel has sold over 150 million records and received six Grammy Awards out of 23 nominations. He is referred to as one of the best-selling artists of the American music industry. He has been presented with multiple honorary doctorates along with a portrait in the Steinway Hall. Billy has also received an induction into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame along with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Many musicians like, Jon Bon Jovi, Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder and Diana Krall have been seen covering his songs at various occasions.
Billy Joel is known for performing live at some of the biggest venues of the US including the Madison Square Garden, Shea Stadium, Hartford Civic Center, Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum and the Wells Fargo Center. The gifted artist has also made television appearances on shows like, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien
and The Howard Stern Show
