About Celtic Woman


Celtic Woman's music encompasses the genres of classical & adult contemporary music, as well as having the spiritually tranquilizing themes of New Age music. Their albums have flown off shelves in the blink of an eye. But the phenomenon wasn't an overnight revelation. Drawing inspiration from Michael Flatley's structure of successful girl groups such as Spice Girls & Pussycat Dolls, Celtic Collections Records executive Sharon Browne brought together five girls whose folk sensibilities were perfectly developed. They did not cut it at local shows, but after striking a PBS Programming deal with Chief Gustavo Sagastume & getting the music direction skills of David Downes on board, Browne intended to target American audiences through a TV show. Downes had been instrumental in transforming Irish step-dance musical, Riverdance, from a Eurovision intermission gap-filler to a global phenomenon & had already worked with Mairead Nesbitt & Lisa Kelly from the Celtic Woman lineup.

The lineup, which included vocalists Lisa Kelly, Chloe Agnew, Orla Fallon & Meav Ni Mhaolchatha as well as fiddler Mairead Nesbitt, had its show recorded at The Helix, Dublin, in September 2004 & released in America in March 2005. It was an instant success, pushing Celtic Woman's eponymous debut album to the top of the charts. Celtic Woman toured a dozen US cities to support their album, & further chart-busting success greeted A Christmas Celebration & A New Journey. A greatest hits album called The Greatest Journey was released later & reached the summit too. Celtic Woman's new album, Songs from the Heart, is currently making waves & they are touring the US in support of the latest offering. Kiwi soprano Hayley Westenra filled Ni Mhaolchatha's role during tours in 2005, before Ni Mhaolchatha split amicably in 2007 to concentrate on her solo career. Similarly, Orla Fallon's solo career prompted her to part ways in 2009, with Lynn Hilary & Alex Sharpe filling the gaps left by the two.

"You Raise Me Up" was the rousing anthem which introduced people to the uplifting folk of Celtic Woman from their debut album. Apart from that, "Ave Maria", "Danny Boy" & "Suilil a Run" became huge hits as Celtic Woman romped to #1 on the World Music charts & stayed there for a record 68 weeks. The record was broken emphatically by their next album, A Christmas Celebration, on the weight of hits like "Carol of the Bells" & "O Holy Night". When their second on-stage (& third overall) album A New Journey hit the top of the charts in 2007, Celtic Woman had three successive albums occupying the top three places in the World Music Charts. "The Voice" & "Spanish Lady" became big hits, & the greatest hits collection The Greatest Journey did remarkably well. "Fields of Gold" & "O America" from Songs from the Heart are already doing the rounds.

Celtic Woman was launched after The Helix live show & their album A New Journey was also recorded at a live performance by the ensemble at Slane Castle, County Meath, Ireland. They have toured USA thrice since the debut release, & the latest show sees them visit New York & New Jersey in July before continuing.
