Gipsy Kings have introduced to the modern world Spain’s traditional Flamenco music. Their Flamenco based music has a strong touch of modern pop. Flamenco is a dance based musical genre which was introduced by Spanish Gypsies. The genre has gained a rapid popularity in the recent decades. Gipsy Kings music is “Rumba Flamenca” styled, their songs are mostly played for Salsa and Rumba dances. Gipsy Kings initially started their musical journey by travelling place to place, playing on parties and weddings. The band was first named as “Los Reyes” which means “The Kings”. Later on they changed their title from The Kings to “The Gipsy Kings”, knowing that that’s what they truly are.
There are no other non-English speaking bands to have had such a famous background in America either. Gipsy Kings are the largest selling French band ever in the US. Discovered by visionary producer Claude Martinez, they made it to the mainstream by their very first single “Bambeleo”, which was a smash hit from their platinum-plus debut studio album. The album also introduced the hit “Djobi Djoba”. Their “Best of The Gipsy Kings” remained on #1 Billboard’s World Music album chart for about a year. Their albums such as “Allegeria”, “Gipsy Kings Live”, “Mosaique” and “Este Mundo” have contributed several songs that have ruled Billboards World Music, Latin and Billboard 200 over the years. They have continuously been titled as #1 Billboard World Music Artist as well as for #1 Latin Pop Artist.
In 1989, the Kings were asked to perform at the opening ball for George Bush, but they didn’t attend because they wanted to return home and spend time with their families. Later in 1989 they performed at Royal Albert Hall along with world’s top names including; Eric Clapton and Elton John.
Gipsy Kings initial success started off in Europe, including Middle East. With the growing eminence, they were offered to sign a contract with Sony Music. Their songs were blockbuster hits and gained them fame around France and various other European countries, where their songs continuously made it to the Top 10 charts. Their records made it to England charts too, a country that is usually reluctant in accepting any form of non-English music. Gipsy Kings have sold internationally more than 18 million records. They have also made a worldwide tour in 2007. In the history of France, there hasn’t been another band to have sold internationally as much as the Kings’. Although some of the Flamenco traditional purists criticize that the merging of drums, electronic keyboards and electric guitars has injured the Flamenco soul, but Kings’ claim that they have brought innovations and have succeeded in keeping alive the otherwise a 'dying' genre of music.
Gipsy Kings journey from their roots to today’s success was featured into a documentary that was released in 1996 under the name “Tierra Gitana”. It is a deeper look into the band’s Spanish gypsy culture and their heritage of flaminco music. It brings to public’s attention the beautiful and colorful lifestyle of gypsy world that’s vanishing by the passage of time. Recently with their track “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” which has been featured in Toy Story 3, Gipsy Kings are hitting the streets in the old gipsy style again.
