About El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico

Rafael Itheir was the pioneer of the group and still is the head musical director. The saxophonist Eddie "La Bala" Pérez and Itheir are the only remaining members from the group’s original lineup. The band is composed of three singers and a total of thirteen orchestra members including Itheir. Rafael has been a member of Rafael Cortijo’s "Cortijo y su Combo" orchestra. The group’s first album was titled Menéame los Mangos, El Gran Combo con Joseito Mateo and was composed in response to a request by the owner of Gema Recording. The label required a back-up band in order to record an album for the legendary singer Joseíto Mateo. Alvarez Guedez who was the Cuban owner of the recording company was informed by Ithier that the name of their band would be El Gran Combo as it incorporates the musician’s former affiliations.
After their first album release in 1963, fame and success became inevitable. The album "Meneame los Mangos" proved a hit not only in Puerto Rico and Panama but also in New York. Many new opportunities were now at their disposal especially in the Latin American markets. The group gained radio time in Puerto Rico and earned an exclusive spot on the television show ‘El show de las 12’. In 1970 the group took a major step when they decided to release an album (Estamos Primera) under their own label titled Combo Records.  In 1973 the ensemble gave one of their most memorable performances in New York at the Yankees Stadium for a crowd of no less than fifty thousand. Their album titled ‘Breaking the Ice’ secured them a Grammy nomination in 1984. Their 20th anniversary comprised extravagant celebrations where the group played at the Madison Square Garden and also played in many parts of Europe including Paris.. In the early 90s they were honored in Madrid, Spain and later on in 1992 the group played in front of a colossal 30000 fans in Hiram Bithorn Stadium. The group has a staggering 40 albums under their belt. El Gran Combo has achieved the gold status for holding the record of most No. 1 hits across Latin Music charts. They play in more than 45 countries annually, averaging about 200 concerts in the most prominent venues around the globe.
