A self-taught musician, Larry became interested in music at an early age. He was influenced by his parents eclectic record collection, which featured the likes of Hank Williams, Jimmy Rodgers and George Jones. His other influences included country music artists from the 1920's and 1930's. After seeing the Beatles performance on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964, Larry decided he wanted to be a guitar player and worked relentlessly on honing his skills.
After graduation, he joined a band called Cottonmouth, and experimented with American roots music. Later, he traveled around the country with bands performing country covers and continued to expand his repertoire with forays into various genres.
Larry with the iconic Dylan
Over the course of his illustrious career, Larry has featured as a sideman or backing musician for a number of famous music artists or bands. Perhaps his most famous run was with music legend Bob Dylan, performing as part of the band on the Never Ending Tour. With Dylan’s band he often performed as guitarist, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, playing multiple instruments such as fiddle, violin, pedal steel guitar, cittern, banjo and the mandolin among others.
Bob Dylan often referred to his backing band as some of the finest musicians in the country when introducing them. When not performing with Dylan's band, Larry continued to make guest appearances with other artists.
An award-winning career
The talented musician has received a number of prestigious awards for his contribution to music. He has been rewarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Americana Music Association for his skilled and prolific instrumental work.
His award-winning production efforts include three Grammy-winning projects with the famous musician Levon Helm. These include the 2007 album Dirt Farmer which won the Grammy for “Best Traditional Folk Album.” Other award-winning albums that Larry has worked on as a producer include Electric Dirt and Ramble at The Ryman.

Counted among one of the most iconic husband wife duos in music, Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams have worked together and contributed to many notable acts over the years. In 2015, they decided to step into the spotlight with their debut collaborative project simply titled Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams. The album features eleven tracks, eight of which are original creations and three are cover versions of famous songs.
Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams have performed together several times. One of their most notable performances was Song of the Mountains, an award-winning concert series at the Lincoln Theater showcasing the best in bluegrass and old-time music. More recently, Larry along with Teresa Williams is set to perform with iconic musician Jackson Browne on his upcoming tour.
