The Formation of Saint Asonia
In 2013, it was announced amidst quite a bit of controversy that the lead singer of popular Canadian hard rock band Three Days Grace, Adam Gontier, was leaving the band. Gontier stated that it was ultimately creative differences which caused him to leave Three Days Grace. In his words: “I was starting to just enjoy not playing music as much at that point and that’s when I realized I needed to take a good look at myself and change what I was doing.” For anyone looking for more insight into what was going on between Gontier and the members of Three Days Grace, he says Saint Asonia’s debut single “Better Place” paints a pretty accurate picture of how things unfolded.
Saint Asonia features Adam Gontier as the lead vocalist, Mike Mushok, the guitarist from Staind and Stereomud, Corey Lowery, the bassist from Dark New Day, and Rich Beddoe, the drummer from Finger Eleven. When the band’s line-up was announced, many people referred to them as a “super group.”
But Gontier says “Truth is we’re more like refugees that just really hit it off creatively.” Mike Mushok further added that the timing was perfect: “I was looking for a project to do while Staind is on hiatus and the opportunity to work with Adam on writing and recording new music was something I just couldn’t pass up.”
Saint Asonia officially came together in 2014. To announce their debut as a band, Saint Asonia released a teaser clip in 2015 which had the band’s name and stated that the new band members have been a part of 26 Top 10 rock singles, and 17 number one songs. The teaser didn’t give much away, aside from the fact that Adam Gontier would be the vocalist of this new band. The identity of the other band members was a mystery to everyone who saw the teaser, until at last, the line-up for Saint Asonia was revealed.
To work on their debut material, Saint Asonia got a hold of Johnny K., the legendary rock producer who had previously worked with bands like Megadeath, Sevendust, Disturbed, and Staind.
Shortly afterwards, they released their debut single ‘Better Place’ which proved to be an instant success. They soon made their debut live performance at Rock on the Range as the opening band for the main stage act. At this point, their album wasn’t out so they performed their first single, as well as the original songs Dying Slowly, Let Me Live My Life, and Fairy Tale. As part of their set list were also cover songs of the Three Days Grace song ‘I Hate Everything About You’ and MötleyCrüe's song "Live Wire."
Their debut studio album was self-titled and was released in July 2015 through RCA Records and featured 11 original tracks. Their second single ‘Blow Me Wide Open’ also did tremendously well on the charts.
