Kiss came into formation in the early seventies in New York City and rose to prominence by the mid of the decade. The ensemble gained prominence for their face paint and flashy outfits. Kiss also made a reputation for their distinctive stage performances featuring smoking guitars, fire breathing, shooting rockets and many other pyrotechnics as well.
The band’s music made it a sensation in the world of hard rock. The band has gone through several lineup changes since its inception and is currently a quartet. The members of Kiss include Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer, Eric Singer and Gene Simmons. The comic book characters that these musicians often portray on stage are Starchild, The Demon, Catman and Space Ace.
Kiss was the brainchild of the bassist and vocalist Gene Simmons and the vocalist and rhythm guitarist Paul Stanley. Both these artists were former members of the hard rock band ‘Wicked Lester’. They gave their first concert in 1973 in Manhattan. Two weeks later, they landed a recording contract. The self-titled debut album of the group was released in 1974, which peaked at number eighty-seven on the U.S. charts. Within a year after that, Kiss had already released three albums and had built a considerable fan following throughout the country. The band also toured extensively and received as much acclaim for its music as for its stage tactics.
Their 1975 album, titled “Alive”, proved to be the international breakthrough for them and made the band rock & roll superstars. It became the group’s first Top Ten record and took the band’s popularity to an all new level. When their next album, “Destroyer”, came out in 1976, it quickly gained the platinum status and cemented the group’s position as a rock band in the international music scene.
Continuing their distinctive streaks, all four members of the band released their solo albums the same day in October 1978. All four albums made it to Top 50. The following year saw the album, “Dynasty” come out which was another addition to the platinum albums by Kiss.
The band released a couple of more albums before they released another certified platinum record, “Lick It Up”, in 1983. “Animalize” was released in the following year which was just as successful. Rest of the decade saw the band releasing several more best-selling albums leading up to their biggest single of all times, Forever, in 1990.
Four decades down the line since their inception, Kiss is still as irresistible to rock music fans as it used to be in the early days of its career. The more recent endeavors by the group include the 2012 album, “Monster”, which is the twelfth overall studio album by the ensemble. The same year Kiss also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and also took a North American tour with Motley Crue. The band has released a total of twenty-eight gold albums to date which is the highest number by any American rock band.
