Born Taalib Johnson in a family of nine children, he changed his name to Musiq Soulchild to show his closeness and love to his true passion, music. His stage name was not adopted randomly or out of fashion, but instead symbolizes deep philosophical thinking. In his own words, “Musiq is the front man and Soulchild is the idea behind it.” For him it was representing the music of old soul stars and their legacies and traditions by him in present times.
Musiq Soulchild, who lists legends like Ray Charles, Sly & the Family Stone, Billie Holiday, Patti LaBelle, James Brown and Stevie Wonder as his influences, never had any doubts about pursuing music as his life long career. In his early age he had decided not to spend too much time at school and after leaving home at the age of seventeen started to work at the local Philadelphia music scene. It was at this time that he started to have a reputation for being musically gifted. However, it was not till 2000 that he got his biggest break with the release of his first studio album, Aijuswanaseing.
‘Aijuswanaseing’, which was a huge commercial success and also certified platinum record, dominated the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart for several weeks. The album had 15 singles, three of which, “Just Friends (Sunny)”, “Girl Next Door (featuring Ayana)”, and “Love”, were especially memorable. They occupied major airtime on the US radio stations.
Soulchild’s second album, Juslisen, was also certified platinum record by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Released in 2002, it had 19 singles, two of which were chartbusters. They were, “Dontchange” and “Halfcrazy”. “Halfcrazy” peaked to position no. 2 on U.S R&B charts and “Dontchange” reached position no. 3 on the same charts. Both songs also did well on the U.S. Hot 100.
In 2003, his album, Soulstar, was released. It was certified gold record. The album which had 15 singles had two outstanding songs, “Whoknows”, and “Forthenight”. Another gold album of Musiq Soulchild which was released in 2007 was Luvanmusiq. While the album was full of memorable songs, “Makeyouhappy”, “Teachme” and “B.U.D.D.Y.” did exceptionally well on the U.S. Hot 100 charts and the U.S. R&B charts.
Apart from being a super-successful solo musician, Musiq Soulchild has collaborated with several other musicians, creating even greater music. For Tyler Perry’s soundtrack, Meet the Browns, he sang a duet with British singer-rapper, Estelle. It was essentially a remake of Arrested Development’s “People Everyday”. He also worked on Perry’s movies, Daddy’s Little Girls and Why Did I Get Married? Soulchild has also worked with rapper Ice Cube on his album, Raw Footage. He also featured on Carlos Santana’s “Shaman”, with a song called, “Nothing At All”. Furthermore, he has collaborated with other artists like Earth Wind and Fire, Black Ice, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Lloyd Banks, amongst others.
Singer-songwriter Soulchild has displayed his acting skills on UPN’s sitcom, All of Us and The CW’s no. 1 comedy, ‘The Game’. He also appeared in advertisements for ‘The Gap’, ‘Levi Strauss & Co.’, ‘Coca-Cola’, ‘Nike, Inc.’, and ‘McDonald’s’.
