Heavy Montreal Metallica
Since 2008, Heavy Montreal, known formerly as Heavy MTL, has drawn the who's who of the metal world. Acts who have performed include both legends and emerging acts. These range from Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Rob Zombie, Slayer, Megadeth, KISS, Alice Cooper, Godsmack to Disturbed, Dethklok, In Flames, Slipknot, Deftones, Marilyn Manson, Children of Bodom and Motorhead.
In 2014, Metallica will headline at one of the main stages of the concert. Other headliners include Slayer, Anthrax, Three Days Grace, The Offspring, Overkill, Apocalyptica, Lamb of God, Symphony X and Whitechapel.
Metallica, a heavy metal icon, began playing its signature blend of thrash metal in 1981. The band rapidly rose to fame and has gone on to release music via Warner Bros, Elektra, Vertigo, Virgin, EMI and Universal. It has been associated with the likes of Megadeth, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Label Society, Exodus and Suicidal Tendencies.
Members of Metallica are Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hammett. The band's former members include Dave Mustaine, who went on to found Megadeth. Metallica's signature style of music, made up of fast tempos, aggressive musicianship and heavy riffs led to the pioneering of thrash metal. Today, they are one of the Big Four of thrash metal, alongside fellow Heavy Montreal headliners Slayer and Anthrax and Megadeth.
The band was founded in 1981 by Lars Ulrich, with James Hetfield joining in after he saw an ad Ulrich had placed in a newspaper. The band rose to fame after releasing four critically acclaimed albums during the 1980s. These albums were seminal works of art and were very influential in defining the metal genre.
Metallica rose to mainstream fame with the release of their self-titled fifth album, also dubbed The Black Album. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and made them a global phenomenon. Commercially, their self-titled 1991 album sold more than sixteen million copies in the US alone and many more abroad as well. It is ranked as the best selling album of the Nielsen SoundScan Era.
Their next four albums all debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, making Metallica the first band to achieve the feat. Overall, they have released nine full-length albums, five EPs, four live albums, thirty seven singles and twenty five music videos.
The thrash metal act has won nine Grammy Awards and in 2009, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band ranks as one of the most commercially successful acts in the world after selling more than 120 million records globally.
