Global Citizen Festival
What is it about?
As its name suggests, the festival targets a global issue each year and attempts to raise support for it. The event is set to coincide with the UN General Assembly. For example, in 2012, the first year of the event, one of the activism action required by attendees was to sign a petition encouraging US to channel more funding for polio eradication. It proved successful leading to a fifty million budget approval for the cause. This year the event boasts a lofty goal of eradicating extreme poverty by the end of 2030.
How to get tickets
Many of the attendees for the Global Citizen Festival are selected through an online raffle for which they have to earn entries by completing various online activism goals. The acts of activism required may be as modest as tweeting for a cause of more proactive like calling the US Department of State. Participants who earn enough points will qualify for the raffle. Four thousand raffle winners are then awarded two free tickets each while the rest of the tickets are sold on the tickets market.
In 2014, the third annual Global Citizen Festival was held on September 27 and brought together music industry’s biggest stars and world’s humanitarian leaders to highlight efforts that could change millions of lives around the globe. Leading music acts were introduced by celebrity activists like Jessica Alba, Hugh Jackman and Adrian Grenier and world leaders like UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Some of the musical acts that featured last year were Tiesto, Fun, Beyonce, Jay Z, Carrie Underwood, Sting and the Roots.
A star-studded lineup
In 2015, like all previous years, the Global Citizen Festival tickets are expected to have a huge demand. This time around the event features a star-studded lineup full of famous celebrities and musicians. Hosting the event will be A-listed celebrities like Hugh and Debora-Lee Jackman, Stephen Colbert, Salma Hayek Pinault, Olivia Wilde and Kerry Washington. Earlier this summer the festival committee also announced the star-studded lineup featuring Cold Play, Beyonce, Ed Sheeran and Pearl Jam in concert.
Year 2015 saw a few notable recruitments to the humanitarian cause as Cold Play lead Chris Martins announced a fifteen year commitment to the Global Citizen Project. Chime for Change, an organization founded by Gucci, Salma Hayek and Beyonce will also be partnering up with Global Citizen to raise awareness about poverty related issues, specifically for girls and women.
Global Citizen Festival has generated quite a buzz online and is shaping up to become one of the biggest annual musical events. It is being hailed as a top ten event in New York City this year and is truly an event worth experiencing live so book your seats soon and help a good cause.
