Born in Jacksonville, Texas in the year 1958, Neal grew up in a music loving family where he listened and absorbed a variety of genres from rock and disco to R&B and country. Initially the singer had formed an R&B music band. However he soon switched to the country genre upon realizing his aptitude for the art form. Subsequently he began to perform at a number of local clubs and bars gaining a modest level of fame and recognition. The singer’s big break came in the form of a talent show that took place in 1981. Having won the competition, Neal occupied a place for the opening act of Charles Pride. It was at this point in time that he assumed his stage name of Neal McCoy, derived from the original Hubert Neal McGaughey, Jr.
In 1988, Neal McCoy signed up with the independent music label called 16th Avenue Records and released singles like ‘That’s American’ and ‘That’s how much I love you’. He had not released an album of his own by this time. Neal continued to tour along Pride performing acts for many of his concerts and shows until the year 1990 when he signed a record deal with the Atlantic Records. Eventually his debut record ‘At this Moment’ was released featuring a title cover track of the famous Billy Vera song. The lead song ‘If I built you a fire’ stood amongst the Top 20 country hits of Canada while other singles too gained a reasonable amount of popularity, both in the US as well as Canada. The singer continued his touring music concerts and within a short period of time developed a strong fan base that anxiously followed his shows throughout the country.
His second record, ‘Where Forever Begins’ was again released under the Atlantic Label in 1992. The album earned him his first entry on the Top Country Albums chart. It also made its way to the American Top 40 country hits with its title track peaking at number forty while ‘There Ain’t Nothing I Don’t Like About You’ and ‘Now I pray for Rain’ at numbers fifty seven and twenty six respectively. His following two albums including ‘Be Good at it’ and self titled ‘Neal McCoy’ presented a variety of music pieces from cover songs to numbers with guest vocals and other collaborative compositions. His last assignment with Atlantic Records was ‘The Life of a Party’ released towards the end of the millennium. It carried two singles namely ‘I Was’ and ‘The Girls of Summer’. Both maintained a strong standing on the Country Music charts of the US.
His twelfth and the most recent album ‘XII’ features the popular singer in a collaborative venture with country’s second couple Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert. The album brings back the uplifting and cheerful music of McCoy that appears all the more refreshing with each song. The album begins on a lighthearted note with the melodious lead single ‘A-OK’ supported by the backing vocals of Lambert and Shelton. Other songs in the record are ‘Lucky Enough’, ‘Real Good Feel Good’, and Borderline Crazy’. Each has a different rhythm, theme and tempo but maintains the signature characteristic of McCoy’s sound.
Neal loves to groove along the stage during his concerts.
