The history of the symphony orchestra is highly intriguing. In 1920, before the Nashville Symphony was created in 1946, a bunch of professional along with amateur musicians and artists fruitfully established an ensemble that was orchestral in the area of Nashville. George Pullen Jackson served at the manager and president of the ensemble. Even though the ensemble grew steadily in the next ten years of it existence, yet it fell prey to The Depression. In 1945, Walter Sharp who was a veteran of World War II and also a native of Nashville came back from the war with a fervent intent of creating a novel symphony for Middle Tennessee. Finally, a year later in 1946 the Nashville Symphony was created.

William Strickland, who was a youthful conductor hailing from New York was hired by Sharp. Strickland was the first music director as well as the conductor for the symphony. In the fall of 1946, the premier concert of the symphony orchestra took place at the famed War Memorial Auditorium located in downtown area of Nashville. Over the next five seasons, the orchestra earned a great repute and its fans grew in numbers by each performance. The standards that Strickland laid for the orchestra are maintained till the present day. The succeeding music directors of the symphony orchestra were Willis Page (1959-1967) Michael Charry (1976-1982), Guy Taylor (1951-1959) and Thor Johnson (1967-1975).

During the time Charry served, the home residence of the symphony shifted to Jackson Hall which is in the Tennessee Performing Arts Center from the War Memorial Auditorium. In September in 2007, the symphony orchestra appointed its 7th music director named Giancarlo Guerrero.
