Born in 1945, Marley along with Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh formed a music group in 1963. Initially known as The Wailing Rudeboys, the reggae and ska band soon came to be known as The Wailers. The trio was joined by Cherry Smith, Beverly Kelso and Junior Braithwaite. The Wailers released their debut album "The Wailing Wailers" in 1965 that comprised hits like 'One Love' and 'Rude Boy'. The group released a string of albums including "The Best of Wailers", "Soul Revolution", and "Soul Rebels" that boosted their fame throughout the region. In 1972, Marley's first international hit came in the form of a cover version of his single 'Stir It Up' by Johnny Nash. The cover version climbed the charts in UK and became an instant hit. The following year, the Jamaican reggae band released their most successful album at that time, "Catch A Fire", which transformed the group members into international stars. "Catch A Fire" broke into the Billboard Black Album and Billboard 200 charts. Over the years, the album has become a critics' favorite and is regarded as one of the best reggae albums. In 1973, The Wailers also released another successful album "Burning" that comprised the song 'I Shot the Sheriff'. In 1974, a cover version of the single by Eric Clapton managed to make 'I Shot the Sheriff' an international hit.
 
After the departure of core members Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh from The Wailers in 1974, Marley continued recording songs as Bob Marley and The Wailers. In 1977, his album "Exodus" peaked at number eight position at UK Album charts. The album was certified gold in the US where as eight times platinum in Canada. The 1979 album "Survival" was also certified two times platinum in Canada, selling over a million copies around the world. After Marley's death, a compilation album was released in 1984 titled "Legend". The album broke into several countrywide charts, peaking at number one spot in UK and Netherlands. "Legends" was also certified two times platinum in Canada, six times platinum in UK and diamond status in the US. The album has sold over twenty five million copies around the world. Over all thirteen studio albums, four live albums and eleven compilation albums have been released under Bob Marley and The Wailers. In 2004, Marley was enlisted as one of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" by Rolling Stones. In 2001, the artist received a "Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award" as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
