About Bill Maher

Maher was born to a Jewish mother and an Irish-Catholic father, in New York City. Raised as a Catholic, he now describes himself as “half-Jewish.” The Maher family stopped attending church services due to Maher’s father’s disagreement with Catholic religion’s stance vis-à-vis birth control. Maher was only thirteen than and perhaps this was the deciding factor in his life which would later turn him a critic of religion! He’s a graduate of Cornell University with a B.A. in history and English.

Bill Maher started his career as an actor and a stand-up comedian. Initially, he began appearing on David Letterman’s and Johnny Carson’s shows. He was also the host of Catch a Rising Star, a New York City comedy club. He has also appeared on two episodes of Murder, She Wrote. He has acted in a number of films, like Pizza Man, Cannibal Woman in the Avocado Jungle of Death, Ratboy and D.C. Cab, doing comic roles.

In addition to his acting skills, Maher is most famously known as a no holds bared socio-political commentator and a political satirist. There is not a topic of public importance that he has not “discussed”. Be it religion, politics, lack of acumen of politicians, lack of interest of the American people in politics, who-is-who of Washington, mass media, corruption, scandals, and political correctness, Maher has done them all. It is his candid and open views on different aspects of American society and his knack for speaking his mind that often cuts him a controversial figure. He has been a regular at shows like, Larry King Live, The Joy Behar Show, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, The Rachel Maddow Show, Hardball with Chris Matthews, and The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer. He is also a blogger at The Huffington Post.

Smart, funny and controversial, Bill Maher is also an activist. He is on the advisory board of NORML, which advocates legalization of marijuana, albeit regulated. He supports the Kyoto Treaty and considers himself an environmentalist. Furthermore, he is on the board of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. He supports euthanasia, abortion and death penalty, also racial profiling at the airports, ever since 9/11. In the realm of religion, he is on the board of Sam Harris’s The Reason Project. This foundation promotes the advocacy of secular values and scientific knowledge within the society. He also advocates universal health care for all Americans and believes that the American Medical Association (AMA) hinders the process of health care reform. While joking about the topic he once said: “If you, the citizen, deliberately vote for someone who won’t give you healthcare over someone who will, you need to have your head examined. Except you can’t afford to have your head examined.” Furthermore, he criticizes 9/11 conspiracy theories.

Maher’s Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher was one of the most popular and watched shows between 1993-1997 and 1997-2002. The show won a Genesis Award for Best Television Talk Show, CableACE Awards for Best Talk Show Series and an Emmy Award for Outstanding Technical Direction. He was also nominated for two Writers Guild nominations, ten Emmy nominations and two TV Guide nominations. The show was later taken off-air after Maher’s controversial remarks on 9/11 incident.

Maher presently hosts Real Time with Bill Maher. This show, like its predecessor, has won accolades. The show has won the Television Producer of the Year Award in Variety Television. It has been nominated for six Writer’s Guild Awards and more than ten Primetime Emmy Awards. This show is also a political-comedy talk show, much like Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher.

An interesting trivia about Bill Maher is that he remains the only person to have received most Emmy nominations without a win. He has been nominated for a total of 22 Emmys, without having to win even one.  The man who creates so much laughter and controversy in one breath is now coming to your town.
