About Lawrence Brownlee Martin Katz

An American operatic tenure, Lawrence Brownlee is the man of bel canto, the Italian phrase for beautiful singing that is done in the opera. Born in Younstown, Ohio, as a child he was not much exposed to classical music. However, he used to sing gospel music at a local church and also played various musical instruments like trumpet, guitar and drums. With his undying love for music, he went to Anderson university in Indiana for an undergraduate degree and later to the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana university for a graduate degree. In his graduate school, he became a member of “Kappa Alpha Psi” and later was initiated into the Indianapolis Alumni Chapter. During his college life, he participated in young artist programs at the Wolf Trap Opera company and the Seattle opera and also had the honor of studying with David Starkey, Fritz Robertson and Costanza Cuccaro.
