Venezuelan conductor and violinist Gustavo Adolfo Dudamel Ramirez was born on January 26, 1981 at Barquisimeto, Venezuela. He is currently the music director of Los Angeles Philharmonic, and principal conductor at the Gothenburg Symphony at Gothenburg, Sweden, and artistic director of Orqestra Sinfonica Simon Bolivar in Caracas, Venezuela. His father was a trombonist and a voice teacher. He began playing violin at the age of 10 while learning music at the famous Venezuelan music education program El Sistema. Soon, he started studying composition. Violin was later taught to him by Jose Luis Jaminiz, at the Jacinto Lara Conservatory. Later on, he joined the Latin American Violin Academy with Jose Francisco Del Castillo.
His conducting career started in 1995 when he started to take a formal training in conducting. He began his training first with Rodolfo Saglimbeni and then later on with José Antonio Abreu. In the year 1999 he was given a position of a music director at Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar. The Orquesta had a very important role to play in the music of Venezuela. It is basically a youth orchestra of the country and has gone on tours to a lot of countries all around the world. Gustavo Dudamel was a man who was immensely talented and made sure that his talent did not go unnoticed. He started working on different projects and his victories became the reason for his popularity. He won the Gustav Mahler Conducting Prize in 2004 in Germany. At that time his reputation as a talented conductor started to spread all around the world. He was instantly noticed by world renowned conductors like Claudio Abbado and Simon Rattle.
This was just the beginning and from here onwards there was no looking back for Dudamel.He signed a contract with Deutsche Grammophon, in 2005.His first performance was with Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philharmonia and Israel Philharmonic. He performed for the first time in La Scala, Milan with one of the world’s famous opera Don Giovanni in 2006.He has the honor of giving his debut performance with San Francisco Symphony in 2008.He kept on working with worlds famous and most talented musicians and has been performing in different venues. He has conducted orchestra at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in January 2007.Apart from performing at different venues he has also performed for all sorts of audiences. He had the privilege of conducting Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra in the honor of Pope Benedict XVI’s 80th birthday. Hilary Hahn was the solo violinist in that concert. Among the audience was the Pope himself along with some other dignitaries and the most respected people of the church.
Gustavo Dudamel has received various awards and has been acclaimed by his audience and musicians all around the world for the services rendered by him to the world of music. He is featured in a documentary film named as Tocar y Luchar.The collaboration of Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar with Dudamel has given them WQXR Gramophone Special Recognition Award on November 2007 in the New York City. He was called "Gustavo the Great” by U.S television who paid tribute to his talent and passion for music. In 2009 he was given the honor of being the, Eighth Glenn Gould Prize laureate. He started working as the music director of Los Angeles Philharmonic on 28th September, 2009.It was in his tenure that rehearsals for Beethoven's 9th Symphony started. At Hollywood Bowl in "Bienvenido Gustavo” he conducted the symphony on third October 2009.
In 2006 he married his girlfriend Eloísa Knife Maturén with whom he has had a very long relationship. She is a journalist and also a trained Ballet dancer. At the marriage Simón Bolívar National Youth Orchestra with the help of Schola Cantorum de Venezuela and other Universidad Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado, was able to make the wedding ceremony an extremely precious and memorable event for Gustavo Dudamel.They could never pay him back for what he has done for the orchestra and the way he has taken it to a place where it stood with glory.
