About Emanuel Ax

Hailing from Lvov, Emanuel Ax is an acclaimed pianist and a devotee of contemporary composers like Mozart and Hans Werner Henze. He shifted to Canada while he was still a boy and went to the Julliard School on Epstein Scholarship Program. After winning the Young Concert Artists Award, he got a chance to continue his studies and majored in French from Columbia University. It was in 1974 that Ax caught the public attention after winning the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition by Tel Aviv. This opened many doors for him and the very next year he won the Michaels Award of Young Concert Artists. After four years, Ax also won the coveted Fisher Prize.
In the last few seasons, he has given three world premieres; John Adams’ “Century Rolls,” Christopher Rouse’s “Seeing” and Bright Sheng’s “Red Silk Dance.” He is an avid performer of works by great contemporary artists and traditional composers like Paul Hindemith, Sir Michael Tippett, Joseph Schwantner, Haydn, Chopin and Beethoven. As a recording artist, Emanuel Ax has been a part of Sony Classical since 1987 and his latest recital disc is scheduled to be released later this year. The disc features the works of artists like Haydn, Copland and Schumann, highlighting the usage of the concept of variation.
Ax’s recent releases include Enoch Arden by Strauss (narration by Patrick Stewart), Mendelssohn Trios with Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma and discs on piano music by Rachmaninoff and Brahms. Emanuel Ax has also won Grammy Awards for his second and third volume of Haydn’s Piano sonatas. Other recording of Ax include three solo albums on Brahms, one album featuring the tangos by Astor Piazzolla, concertos of Schoenberg and Liszt.
Ax worked for a long time with Yo-Yo Ma as a recital partner and recorded the Brahms and Beethoven sonatas for piano and cello. The duo’s first public recital was at the Marlboro Music School and Festival. The two musicians also performed with Jaime Laredo and Isaac Stern for a brief time period. Due to Isaac’s death in 2001, the quartet disbanded. Ax was featured as a guest artist in a documentary film about Five Days in September; the Rebirth of an Orchestra and Toronto Symphony Orchestra. In addition to these woks, he also kept touring the world to give live performances. He recently toured Asia with Alan Gilbert of New York Philharmonic and Europe with Pittsburgh Symphony and Chamber Orchestra of Europe.
