This name was altered with its current name in 1974, the intention of which was to make its clear its mission of serving the whole community. Though it has been performing for a long time, the orchestra’s popularity tremendously rose only recently with the coming of Music Director William Intriligator. In the 1999-2000 season, the orchestra went on a nationwide to find a new Maestro who could take over the responsibilites of Nicholas Palmer. Board of Directors along with the orchestra’s patrons, unanimously chose Intriligator as the orchestra’s third Music Director as well as Conductor.

Around the same time that the new Music Director was appointed, the DSO body came to realilze that change was much needed in its Board and staff. The latter added many new positions including bookkeeper, Director of Development, and Director of Marketing, while its senior administrative executive looked for and hired new Executive Directors who with expertise and experience.  The forthcoming Dubuque Symphony Orchestra Holiday Pops Celebration will prove just why and how the DSO has made such a strong connection with the Dubuque Community.
