Some of the most notable musicians who have performed with DSO include pianists Jeffrey Biegel, Jon Nakamatsu, Navah Perlman, Radoslav Kvapil, Robert Taub, Bruce Brubaker, Peter Vinograde, Ron Regev, Jung Lin, Davide Cabassi, Antonio Pompa-Baldi and Chiu-Ling Lin; renowned voilinists include Sung-Ju Lee, Leopold La Fosse, Yuri Namkung, Hiroko Yajima, Lynn Chang, Rachel Lee, Mark O’Connor, Judith Ingolfsson, Jennifer Koh and Benny Kim; viola players include Steven Tenebom and Toby Appe; cello players include Zuill Bailey, Mark Kosower and Hai-Ye Ni, and other instrumentalists such as bassoon player George Zukerman and tuba player Rex Martin.
The foundations of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra can be traced back to 1903, but its current structure as it operates was created in 1958 under the title of University Civic Symphony. This name was altered with its current name in 1974, the intention of which was to make its clear its mission of serving the whole community. Though it has been performing for a long time, the orchestra’s popularity tremendously rose only recently with the coming of Music Director William Intriligator. In the 1999-2000 season, the orchestra went on a nationwide to find a new Maestro who could take over the responsibilites of Nicholas Palmer. Board of Directors along with the orchestra’s patrons, unanimously chose Intriligator as the orchestra’s third Music Director as well as Conductor.
Around the same time that the new Music Director was appointed, the DSO body came to realilze that change was much needed in its Board and staff. The latter added many new positions including bookkeeper, Director of Development, and Director of Marketing, while its senior administrative executive looked for and hired new Executive Directors who with expertise and experience. The forthcoming Dubuque Symphony Orchestra Holiday Pops Celebration will prove just why and how the DSO has made such a strong connection with the Dubuque Community.
The featured guest artist at the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra Holiday Pops Celebration show, mezzo- soprano Mary Kate Bristow has been singing professionally for more than twenty years during which time she has performed throughout the Midwest, and has studied voice techniques as well as theater at Indiana University. Bristow has also performed in Australia at the famous World’s Fair, while she has also made an appearance with the prestigious likes of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra performing under maestro Erich Kunzel. When she relocated to Dubuque, she appeared at the well-known Eagle Ridge Resort and Inn, the Grape Escape, Fried Green Tomatoes and other venues. The artist now resides in Bloomington, Indiana, where she actively pursues her passion and talent for music.
