The current Principal Conductor of CSO is Bernard Haitink who is known for his classical music talents. With Pierre Boulez as Conductor Emeritus and Cliff Colnot as the Civic Orchestra Conductor, CSO has got its Chorus Director Duain Wolfe and their Concertmaster is Robert Chen.
 
The notable instruments of CSO are Violin the Baron von der Leyen 1715 Stradivari, Viola Domenico Montagnana 1723 along with Violoncello Bein, Fruh 1727 Stradivari. It is due to the efforts of Charles Norman Fay and Theodore Thomas that we have got CSO today. Originally it was named as the Chicago Orchestra, it gave its first concert on 16th October, 1891 at the famous Auditorium Theatre. Designed in in 1904, by a famous architect Daniel H. Burnham, Orchestra Hall, is a part of the Symphony Center complex now. After the death of Thomas the orchestra was given a new name of Theodore Thomas Orchestra during 1905. However, later on the name was changed to Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1913, but even today its Orchestra Hall has Theodore Thomas Orchestra Hall written on its front.
 
Its other famous music directors who have contributed a great deal in the orchestra include Désiré Defauw, Rafael Kubelík, Artur Rodzinski, Fritz Reiner, Daniel Barenboim, Jean Martinon, Sir Georg Solti. CSO has also given it music to several movies including Casino and Fantasia 2000. The talents and popularity of this orchestra can be gauged by the fact that Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s recordings have got about sixty two Grammy Awards from the famous Recording Arts and Sciences National Academy.
