The mission of the BSO is to present the greatest of all shows with music that is enjoyed by a wide range of audiences. It also provides musical education for young learners who are interested in music from the Kern County. Currently each performer who is a part of the BSO is under the supreme guidance of Maestro John Farrer. This year marks Farrer’s 38th year on the post of Musical Director of the BSO. This professional orchestra comprises of a total of 60 to 80 performing musicians and members. 70 percent of these members are residing and also working in Bakersfield while the others are associated with other orchestra companies that are based in Central and Southern California.

The BSO marked its 80th anniversary in 2012. Even though it has suffered economic crisis in the past, it has managed to emerge successfully out of it and been consistently providing with some of the greatest entertaining shows ever. The formation history of the orchestra is quite interesting. It started out as a simple night class on the acclaimed Kern County Unified High School District premises as a small community orchestra that simply just rehearsed under the leadership of Harold Burt. In 1932, this class turned into becoming an official orchestra. It performed frequently prior to World War II. After the war broke out, the BSO went into a hiatus.

In 1946, it was revived once more under the Kern Philharmonic Society. 1974 saw the orchestra moving to the Civic Auditorium that is now known as the Rabobank Theater with John Farrer as the leading conductor. In 1982, it was renamed once more and became known as the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra. With Farrer as the conductor, the BSO expanded its performing seasons and also provided educational concerts for school going students. It also effectively sponsored a few detached concert series for innovative music, chamber music as well as Baroque music. For the past 35 years, the BSO has been presenting the famous “Nutcracker” ballet show every December in collaboration with the Civic Dance Theater.

Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra Harmonia Alert that is scheduled for April 2013 will be bringing a new show titled as “Harmonia Alert!” along with two fresh sounds to the program of the BSO. CSUB professor Doug Davis displaying some new music and the popular Concerto for Harmonica led by Heitor Villa-Lobos will be featured along with Robert Bonfiglio who is known as “the Paganini of the harmonica” as the visiting soloist.
