The fall of the iconic year of 2000 saw banjo player Michael Arlen Bont, guitarist Dave Bruzza and mandolin player Paul Hoffman come together in Kalamazoo, Michigan to form the cleverly titled Greensky Bluegrass. Right from the outset, though they did infuse considerable inspiration from their favorite bluegrass acts but yet were mindful of defining their own unique sound and distinct vocal identity. Greensky Bluegrass came out with their debut record Less Than Supper in 2004 and released it under the music label Big Blue Zoo. They album also incorporated the sounds of Al Bates on the dobro and Chris Carr on the bass, whereby establishing the five-piece identity of their act early on. However, they were not able to retain Carr and Bates and instead took bassist Michael Devol for their sophomore studio offering Tuesday Letter that was released in 2006. The album was borne out of collaboration with Railroad Earth's Tim Carbone and notched a notable niche in the bluegrass community.
Though not gaining much commercial and chart success, Greensky Bluegrass acquired some resounding recognition in 2007 by winning the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition and hence clinched a spot in the lineup for the main stage performances. This exposure greatly boosted their popularity that has since undergone an ever-increasing trend. The same year also saw them come out with their first live album Live at Bell's, taking its name from their performances at Bell's Brewery back in their hometown. Shortly afterwards, Greensky Bluegrass completed their trademark quintet lineup by inducting dobro player Ander Beck, formerly of Wayword Sons. The band's 2008 album Five Interstates released by the same label also had Tim Carbone contributing his services as producer. 2009 and 2010 saw Greensky Bluegrass come out with a double helping of their music in the form of All Access Vol. 1 & 2. The band however, achieved acclaim on the charts for the first time with 2011's Handguns that peaked at the 3rd spot on the US Bluegrass chart in October and managed to stay at the 33rd spot at the yearend Billboard's Bluegrass Chart. Your cheap Greensky Bluegrass tickets will treat you to their musically perennial produce.
