American rock band Widespread Panic started its journey towards excellence in 1986 at Athens, Georgia. Band members currently include Dave Schools on bass, Domingo Sunny Ortiz on percussion, Todd Nance on drums, John Jojo Hermann on keyboards, Jimmy Herring on guitars, while John Bell plays guitars as well as is the lead vocalist. Widespread Panic released their first live album Light Fuse in 1998, and celebrated its release by throwing a free CD release party at Athens. The concert turned out to be a huge success, attracting more than a 100,000 fans at the party, thus making it one of the largest CD release parties in history. A couple of years later at Bonnaroo Music Festival, the band maintained its reputation for gathering huge audience by drawing more than 70,000 people on a two nights concert. The band suffered a huge loss in 2002 when its lead guitarist Michael Houser succumbed to pancreatic cancer. George McConnell took over as lead guitarist afterwards, until 2006 when he left the band after his farewell performance. Ever since, James Herring has been on lead guitars for the band.
The band has been very popular ever since its inception, and both general public as well as music critics have admired their performances and quality of their music. Their work has been acknowledged on every level, evident from their induction into Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2008. County and City of Denver celebrated June 27, 2008 as Widespread Panic day, owing to the fact that they performed their 32nd sold out show at Red Rocks Amphitheater, that was a record in venue’s history.
