Volbeat is a brainchild of Michael Poulsen, who also happens to be the group’s vocalist. Poulsen was one of the members of “Dominus,” a death metal group. That group played for a decade before folding when Poulsen decided he had had enough of death metal. He then began to play with some of the former members of Dominus. They were joined on those sessions by a few of Poulsen’s friends as well.
Those sessions sowed the seeds of the creation of Volbeat. The name of the group was inspired by “Vol.Beat” an album that was released by Dominus. The band began to play together professionally and it didn’t take them too long to make their mark. Volbeat recorded a demo tape titled “Beat the Meat.” It turned out to be a big enough success to land the group their first ever recording contract with “Rebel Monster Records.”
With the backing and marketing muscle of a record label on their side, Volbeat hit the studio and released their debut album “The Strength/The Sound/The Songs” in the year 2005. Franz Gottschalk was on guitars, Anders Kjolholm took over as the bassist, Jon Larsen played the drums and Poulsen himself was on vocals. The album was an instant hit in their native Denmark. Critical response was off the hook and the album earned a full ten points out of ten from “RockHard,” the famous German hard rock publication. Not only that but it also went on to scoop multiple awards at the Danish Metal Music Awards ceremony which was held in the year 2005.
Volbeat made another serious impression with their next album titled “Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil.” It hit the music stores in 2007 and it went on to become the best selling album in no time. The success by that point brought them to the notice of other big names and that is what brought their way the opening at the Roskilde Festival. Not only that, but Volbeat also played with the likes of Metallica and Megadeth on some concerts.
Gottschalk was replaced by Thomas Bredahl shortly afterwards and the band went to work on their next album. “Guitar, Gangsters & Cadillac Blood” was released in 2008 and went to the top of charts in Finland soon after. Volbeat then went on to play at the “Przystanek Woodstock.” It is the biggest music event in Europe which is attended by a whopping four hundred to five hundred thousand fans annually.
“Beyond Hell/Above Heaven,” Volbeat’s next offering came out on 10th September, 2010 and became another big hit. It received four and a half out of a total of five stars from Sputnikmusic and Allmusic gave it three and a half out of five for its efforts. Beyond Hell/Above Heaven also became the group’s first album ever to make an appearance on the Billboard 200. It was a picture perfect blend of what makes the group so special. What followed were huge trip to North America for two year running in 2011 and 2012. The band followed that up with “Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies” in the year 2013 another album that has been received very favorably.
