Third Eye Blind
Third Eye Blind – The Formation
Initially based in San Francisco, Third Eye Blind’s members are today spread out, residing in different localities. With the members living in Vegas, Southern California, greater Bay Area and San Francisco, they are able to bring freshness into their recording sessions and creative process. The current lineup includes lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Stephan Jenkins, drummer and percussionist Brad Hargreaves and Kryz Reid playing the lead guitar and providing backing vocals. Keyboards and piano are played by Alex Kopp and Alex LeCavalier is the bassist. Third Eye Blind was started by Stephan Jenkins, who besides providing the lead vocals, also performs songwriting and producing duties. He was intrigued by the prospect of using music to tell stories and started his career with a band called Puck & Natty and later ventured with numerous other acts. Through luck he met the other members of the Third Eye Blind and slowly the lineup started to form. They recorded few demos and after establishing themselves with live performances, got an opportunity to open for the Oasis. Their performance received great reception and the band was asked to return for more. It also brought them the right attention as many record labels wanted to sign them. After much deliberation they decided with Elektra Entertainment as they felt the label would give them artistic freedom.
Best Selling Debut with More Hits to Follow
Third Eye Blind’s debut record came out in 1997 and it has been reviewed as one of the greatest alternative rock albums. The 14-track record has no fillers and has music that’s admired for its relevancy. The songs hit mark at all levels and listeners can easily relate to them, be it the distress of losing a dear one, pain of an unsuccessful relationship or the happiness after overcoming these hardships. From the start till the end, “Third Eye Blind” has passionate and energetic songs. Jumper, Semi-Charmed Life and How’s It Going to Be made it to the Top 10 on the Billboard 200. “Blue” followed in 1999 and although the album peaked at 40th position on the Billboard charts, it wasn’t able to match the success of its predecessor. But the band had cultivated the most dedicated fan following and they helped in making “Blue” a Platinum record, selling 75,000 copies in the first week alone. The album showcased TEB’s versatility and had an eclectic blend of 90s’ style funk, a bit of opera, computerized effects and solid rock.
In 2003 and 2009, the band came out with “Out of the Vein” and “Ursa Major” respectively, both doing well on the charts. Third Eye Blind’s latest album “Dopamine” hit the shelves in 2015 and peaked at number 13 on the Billboard charts. According to the Rolling Stone, the 90s’ alternative rock veterans can still bring the hooks. The album has a youthful energy to it that’s honest and sincere. Most of the songs have been composed around acoustic instruments, giving them a raw and organic feel. The album includes powerful anthems like Everything is Easy and Rites of Passage, as well as the brilliantly penned song Shipboard Cook.
