The Mountain Goats
Starting off in 1991 to pursue a career in music as The Mountain Goats moniker became Darnielle’s dream come true. However, in the beginning the band’s low profile music remained a part of the underground stream for some time. The devoted underground following drove the band to continue making music and release songs. However, the downside of the initial four years was a line-up that never assembled. It kept on falling when one member left after the other. However band members Rachel Ware, Franklin Bruno, Erik Friedlander, Rosanne and JohnVanderslice are a few that left a mark on the bands style and delivery of music. Until 1995, the band kept touring with a crumbling line-up until Hughes became a part of the Mountain Goats. This bass player fit in perfectly with Darnielle’s picture of the band he wanted.
The band has always been Darnielle's pet project that focused on experimentation in folk music. His deeply rooted love for tradition and fusion came together as a successful experiment. Inspirational tones from a singer like Bob Dylan and bands like the Byrds and the Gourds were evident in their work. Furthermore, amongst these experiments the band spent most of its time and energy on concept albums. Collaboration and support lent by Darnielle to bands such as the Salvation Brothers and Congress also helped the band substantiate its music stance. Consequently the three most intriguing names of the band’s album profile remain the Zopilote Machine (1994), Sweden (1995), and Tallahassee (2003). Two of these remained subdued as musically humble but Tallahassee outshined to become one of the band’s most appreciated albums.
John Darneille’s voice teamed with the acoustic guitars and the organ sound of the seventies crafted the most alluring folk. This called for great demand for new music as well as frequent touring form the band. Together with Hughes, Darnielle the band toured and created multiple albums with hit names like Nine Black Poppies (1995) followed by Coroner's Gambit (2000) and the critically acclaimed Tallahassee (2002). Off these albums hit singles Pale Green Things, Your Belgian Things and First Few Desparate Hours became the band’s claim to fame.
The Mountain Goats’ timeline shows consistency throughout bringing fresh innovative folk that failed to falter. Darnielle’s prolific songs and profound soundscape allowed every album to resurface as a creative concept. With an overall surrealistic tone and impressionist feel the band released seven and multiple compilation singles. Apart from the hit works, three compilation albums brought together in the late nineties remain one of the best loved works; Full Force Galesburg (1997), Nothing for Juice (1997) and Protein Source of the Future...NOW! (1998).
The Mountain Goats and the new millennium brought forth The Coroner's Gambit. This album was the last album that the band recorded for Absolutely Kosher. It also brought the band to its second label 4 A.D. Under this umbrella a brilliant line up of albums was delivered that began from Tallahassee. This released followed by We Shall All Be Healed (2004) and The Sunset Tree (2005). From these ventures to Get Lonely (2006) the band changed moods from energetic to calm. However, the gears alternated again with Heretic Pride (2008) was chased by a gospel inspired The Life of the World to Come (2010). Merge Records became the band next stand after 4A.D. All Eternals Deck came out as the first release under this label. The collaborations on this album landed the band at various live shows. Interestingly in 2012 the Mountain Goats long lost cassette collection; bringing songs off The Hound Chronicles (1992) and Hot Garden Stomp (1993). This collection was compiled and presented on Shrimper. The compilation was very successful in engaging a large folk fan fare in listening to this music.
