Primus released its debut studio album, called Fizzle Fry, 1990. The album was a breakout success for a small underground band. It featured such hit singles as “John the Fisherman” and “Too Many Puppies.” The band’s popularity grew almost overnight. This was mainly due to a music video that featured Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammet as well as a tour with popular grunge band Jane’s Addiction. As a result of this recognition, the band was signed to the influential Interscope Records.
Primus released their follow-up the year after they were signed to Interscope. The album was called Sailing Seas of Cheese and contained the singles “Tommy the Cat” and “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver.” Both songs received heavy rotation on MTV. Sailing Seas of Cheese was certified gold by the RIAA. The band then toured with many prominent rock bands as a supporting act. These bands included luminaries like Rush, U2, Anthrax and Fisbone. The band’s next release, an EP made up of cover songs, was released a year later. This release was met with critical acclaim and received extensive airplay on the radio. It reached number thirty on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

The album contained “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver”, Primus’ most successful single ever. The song was nominated for a Grammy Award and led to performances on late night talk shows. This increased the band’s profile. For the remainder of the 1990s, Primus continued to release albums. The band was consistently successful and toured extensively.
