Nouvelle Vague is a brainchild of two popular French musicians namely Olivier Libaux and Marc Collin. It was founded in 2003. The group is famous as a cover band that revives classic songs from the New Wave era and reinterpret them in bossa nova style. Bossa nova is a popular dance music form hails from Brazil and it is sometime also considered as a lyrical fusion of jazz and samba music. Nouvelle Vague is a French word that actually means New Wave. There are a number of popular French artists who used to be associated with the band in the early part of their career and then they moved on to pursue successful solo music careers. Some of the ex-members of Nouvelle Vague are multi instrumental composer Gerald Toto, French indie pop singer Melanie Pain, actor and singer Camille. Famous singer, actor and former beauty queen Mareva Galenter also sings as a touring member for Nouvelle Vague.
The first album by the band was self-titled and it included cover songs of acclaimed bands like The Clash, The Undertones, The Cure and Modern English. The album was released in 2004 and included singles like “Making plans for Nigel”, “I Melt With you”, “A Forest” and “Guns of Brixton”. The second album was titled Bande a Part. It was released by Peacefrog Records and went on sale in 2006. The album had cover singles like “Dancing with Myself” by Billy Idol, “Heart of Glass” by Blondie, “The Killing Moon” by Echo & the Bunnymen, “Dance with Me” by The Lords of the New Church and “Pride (In the Name of Love)” by U2. In 2009 two albums were released namely 3 and Acoustic. The later one was a limited edition that was released only in Portugal. 3 was also released by Peacefrog records and this included tracks by bands like Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, Sex Pistols, The Police, Soft Cell and The Psychedelic Furs.
The band went on to release two more studio albums that failed to get much attention. Nouvelle Vague continues to perform live. Many of the covers that were done by this group have garnered accolades and have been used in a number of movies and TV serials. In one of the episodes of the famous musical comedy drama Glee, cover version of Nouvelle Vague’s single “Heart” originally sung by Blondie was featured. The romantic comedy movie Accidental Husband starring Uma Thurman also included a cover song of the band named “Ever Fallen In Love” that was originally a song by punk rock band Buzzcocks. Teenage Kick was a single that was originaly sung by The Undertones and the cover version by Nouvelle Vague was featured in the British sitcom The Inbetweeners. The band covered the famous song by British psychedelic group Echo and the Bunnymen’s called “The Killing Moon”, this was featured in a program of Discovery Channel that went on air in 2010.
