Hailing from Athens, a city having rich musical history, Futurebirds is a young indie rock band which was formed in 2008. Supported by instruments like mandolin, acoustic, electric and pedal steel guitars, banjo and percussions, their music combines sweet-soaked harmonies which can be best described as psychedelic country. The band is mostly known for their high energy performances which are infused with country rock and a hint of psychedelic. The band comprises of six amazing musicians - Carter King on vocals, drums and banjo, Daniel Womack on vocals, acoustic guitar and banjo and Payton Bradford on vocals, guitar, drums, banjo. Thomas Johnson also provides vocals, plays the mandolin, guitar and banjo Dennis on pedal steel guitar along with Brannen Miles on banjo, bass and vocals.
In 2009 the band released their debut, a self-titled recording, which earned them critical response. With the release of this EP, the band successfully established itself as a country-rock band with an impressive psychedelic twist. The EP was released again in 2011 on Autumn Tone Records. Followed by this, their first full-length studio album, “Hampton’s Lullaby” was released in 2010 on the same record. Year later, the second EP “Via Flamina” was released. However, the real breakthrough of this Athen’s newest child came when “Baba Yaga,” their second full-length album hit the stores on 16th April 2013. This album was released on the incredible Fat Possum Records.
“Baba Yaga,” which is a fascinating amalgam of stirring lyrics, indelible tunes, instrumental rapport and evocative rhythms, was recorded in a total of 45 days spanning over the course of more or less seven months. During the time, the band was also involved in making several arrangements for the tour. The name of the album, taken from a famous Russian folk lore, alone stimulates the imagination of the listeners. The album consists of 13 songs which include some really catchy tunes such as “Death Awaits,” “Serial Bowls,” “Virginia Slims” and “St. Summercamp.” Featuring an impressive craftsmanship of the six band members, the release of this album is definitely a milestone which marks the progression of this unique eclectic ensemble.
In 2011, the group toured as a guest band with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals on their Bonnaroo Buzz Tour. Futurebirds has recently performed at the End of the World Party along with Turf War, Natural Child, Diarrhea Planet and New Madrid. They gave two live performances at the Bonnaroo Music and Art Festival in 2011 and also did live shows at the Hangout Music Festival in 2012. In the last two years i.e. 2011 and 2012, the band successfully completed its Holiday Road Tour and Black Diamond Tour. They have also appeared many times on the stage with The Whigs, Widespread Panic, Drive-By Truckers, Blitzen Trapper, Alabama Shakes, Dead Confederate, Heartless Bastards and Jonny Corndawg. With their relentless touring, the band has a huge fan following all over the world which is quite an accomplishment for a band as young as Futurebirds. Among some other prestigious festivals where the band performed includes Outside Lands, Forecastle, Wakarusa and Austin City Limits.
