Dropkick Murphys was formed in the year 1996 as an underground band practicing in the basement of a barber’s shop. The bands major influences were acclaimed legendary punk bands like Thin Lizzy, The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers and The Pogues. After sometime the band realized that people loved their style of music and therefore decided to record songs and start tours. The main thing that leads to the band’s popularity is their exceptional live performances. Dropkick Murphys were initially signed by Hellcat records based in Los Angeles California and released 5 albums and later on they joined the world renowned music label Warner Bros. Records.
Every year thousands of Fans from all over the world travel to Boston just to watch the band perform live on St. Patrick’s Day festival and albums of these live shows break records when they go on sale. Band’s current members are Al Barr- vocals, Ken Casey on bass guitar and vocals, Matt Kelly- drums, James lynch- lead guitars, Josh Wallace-bagpipes, Tim Brennan-guitar and accordion, Jeff DaRosa-banjo and mandolin. The band is an avid supporter of its home state sports teams Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins.
Dropkick Murphys released their 1st album Do or Die in 1998 with Celtic rock being the major influence, it was well received by both the fans and critics. 2nd album The Gang’s All Here followed in 1999 and the sound of this album was more of Street-Hardcore Punk, video of this album’s single 10 years Of Service gave mainstream recognition to the band and was aired on MTV. 3rd album Sing Loud Sing Proud! was released in 2001 and this showed the diverse side of Dropkick Murphys as the band added new members and instruments like whistle, mandolin and accordion. The year 2003 saw yet another successful album Blackout which had some instant hit singles like Fields of Athenry and Walk Away, one song Time to Go was written for the Boston Bruins and the band also performed it live at one of the Bruins games.
The 5th album "The Warrior’s Code" was released in 2006 and one song I Am Shipping Up To Boston was included in the soundtrack of Academy Award winning film The Departed, this gave the band even more mainstream fame and audience, the album also included a re-worked version of the Boston Red Sox song Tessie and still this song is played at the end of every game the team wins. In 2007 the band releases their 6th album The Meanest Of Times under their own label Born & Bred Records in collaboration with music giant Warner Bros. Records. Meanest of Times proved to be the band’s most successful album to date with debuting at no 20 on US Charts the highest chart debut for the band with the single The State of Massachusetts becoming one of the most played alternative rock songs of 2007. This song was also played as an anthem for 2009 -10 seasons of AFL (Australian Football League).
Dropkick Murphys ever-increasing fame got them an opportunity to play with some much respected names of the music industry, in 2009 they performed live on stage with famous singer and musician Bruce Springsteen. In the same year they had the privilege to open up for the legendary rock band Aerosmith and also joined them on stage to perform the single Dirty Water.
