The three band members Matthew Schultz, Brad Schultz and Jared Champion were together in a band called as Perfect Confusion. The band was short lived but released an album under the same name. After Perfect Confusion disbanded, the members got together and formed a new band and called it Cage the Elephant.
The band was given a lot of exposure and their breakthrough came when they performed at the South by Southwest Festival in 2007. As a result they were signed by Relentless Records. The first album titled as the name of the band, was released in UK in June 2008 and US/Australia/Canada/Japan, almost a year later to the UK release, in April 2009 and was given a lot of positive reviews. It has twelve tracks. The album has sold over four hundred thousand copies in the United States and was produced by Jay Joyce. The album was released by Red Ink Records in the US. The album peaked at number 67 on the Billboard 200. The single Ain't No Rest for the Wicked was especially important because is reached thirty two on the UK Singles Chart, number eighty three on the Billboard 100 and was featured on Borderlands, a video game.
Initially Cage the Elephant toured alongside The Pigeon Detectives in 2008 and later toured with The Manchester Orchestra and the Silversun Pickups in the year 2009. They were given international exposure when they were featured on the Late Show with David Letterman in the same year. After that, they performed at various festivals and concerts including the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival and the Bonnaroo Festival. They also performed at the Lollapalooza in the city of Chicago. More recently, they have toured with Stone Temple Pilots.
In January of 2011, the band released their second album titled Thank you, Happy Birthday in Canada and the United States. The album, like the previous one, was produced by Jay Joyce and features twelve tracks. This album brought them a lot of success and their fan base instantaneously expanded to a bigger figure. The album was the most downloaded album on iTunes and sold roughly forty thousand copies. The band was named the MTV Push Artist of the Week in the same week as the release of the album. Critics received the album well and said it was an improvement and that the music was alarmingly good. The Single Shake Me Down was particularly well received after the release of its music video on January 11, 2011.
The lineup of the band consists of five people. Matthew Schultz on lead vocals and piano, Brad Schultz on rhythm guitars and backing vocals, Loncoln Parish on lead guitar, Daniel Tichenor on Bass and backing vocals and last but not the least, Jared Champion on drums, percussion and backing vocals.
