Nigel Godrich, a producer for Radiohead also participates in this band on keyboard and synths. Godrich has worked with Radiohead since 1994 and has worked with many influential artists such as Paul McCartney, Jason Falkner and U2. R.E.M’s drummer, Joey Waronker, also brings forth his talent in Atoms for Peace. He joined R.E.M after their original drummer, Bill Berry, left. Waronker has played an extensive range of albums and has recorded with Paul McCartney, Pink, Cat Stevens and many more. Mauro Refosco, an instrumentalist from Brazil and member of the band, Forro in the Dark, does percussion for Atoms for Peace. Refosco has also done percussion for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers since 2011.
The band first played together on October 2nd 2009 at the Echoplex in Los Angeles. They performed every song from Yorke’s first solo album, titled “The Eraser” as well as songs from Radiohead’s B-Side “Paperbag Writer”. After this they performed two shows in the Orpheum Theatre on 4th and 5th October. The band till then was referred to as “??????”. It was not until February 2010 that the band’s name was changed. Before that it went by the title “??????” or either “Thom Yorke????”,and was simply titled “Thom Yorke” on the band’s official website. After announcing the US April Tour, Yorke officially declared that the band was under the name “Atoms for Peace”. Yorke tweeted in March 2010 “it has been decided that we call ourselves Atoms for Peace. Hope you like the name.. it seemed bleedin obvious.”
The band named themselves after President Eisenhower’s speech in 1953 and a song from Yorke’s solo album “The Eraser”. The phrase,“Nerth Nuclerek? Na Vynnav”, which translates from Cornish to “Nuclear Power, No Thanks”, is under the band’s name on their official website. This is derived from the text from Smiling Sun anti-nuclear logo. Thom Yorke remarks about their song “Judge, Jury and Executioner” as the band’s first collaborative song. This song was first played in Los Angeles during their debut shows. Atoms for Peace has performed at Fuji Rock which till date is the band’s only performance out of the United States.
The band’s first album, Amok peaked at no.2 on the US Billboard 200. It has also peaked no.3 in the Mega Charts in Netherlands. They have released a total of four singles together since 2009, two of which were in 2012 and the rest in 2013. The first two were “Tamer Animals/Other side and “Default” and the other two included “Judge, Jury and Executioner” and “Before Your Very Eyes”. They have also released two music videos in 2013, one for the song, “Judge , Jury and Executioner” and the other for “Ingenue”.
