The band was formed in 1999 by Howerdel and Keenan. The two had met earlier when Howerdel's old band Fishbone opened for Keenans Tool in 1992. A few years later, Howerdel stayed at Keenan's house. Keenan heard some of the music that Howerdel had made and told him that he could hear himself singing the tunes Howerdel made. A few years later, A Perfect Circle was formed. The lineup of the band wasn't exactly what it is today. The band changed their drummer, bassist and guitarist atleast once. Keenan and Howerdel have however been their from the start.
The band has released three albums since its formation, namely, Mer de Noms, Thirteen Step and Emotive. The first release Mer do Noms came out on 23rd May, 2000. The name is french and means 'Sea of Names'. This album was a tremendous success. It reached number four on the billboard 200 and sold a record number of copies for a debut rock band in the first week. Howerdel had been working on some of the tracks in the album since 1988. Soon after the album was recorded, A Perfect Circle started touring with Nine Inch Nails and later on got their own tours too. Keenan, who didn't want his identity from Tool to be seen on A Perfect Circle, wore wigs to change his onstage personality. Some of the famous singles on Mer de Noms are The Hollow, 3 libras and Judith. The lyrics of all these songs have deep meanings and are related to the lives of the band members in one way or the other. Mer de Noms was certified as a platinum record in October 2000.
The second album, Thirteen Step, was released in September 2003. Between 2000 and 2002, Keenan was working with his band Tool on the album Lateralus. As a result of Keenan touring with tool, A Perfect Circle
was somewhat ignored. This caused two band members to leave. James Iha came in as a replacement for the guitarist and still is a part of the band. Thirteen Step had a different sound. The tunes were more melodic and the instruments were not as heavy as in Mer de Noms. Some of the famous singles from the album are 'Blue', 'The Outsider' and 'Weak and Powerless'. The band started touring for the new album early in 2004, moving around Europe, Japan, New Zealand etc. The tour went on till June.
The last album, Emotive was released in November 2004 and contained covers of songs like 'Imagine' by John Lennon. Some of the songs in the album were used by movies in trailers and in between as background music. The reviews for Emotive were not always good, specially the covers were criticized. A fortnight after the release of the album, a CD-DVD set called Amotion was released which contained music videos of some old singles and some new ones too. The CD has remixes of songs from Thirteen Step and Mer de Noms.
The band became inactive after Emotive for about 6 years. During this time Howerdel started a new band called Ashes Divide and Keenan worked on the album 10,000 days with Tool. Reports in 2008 suggested that the band were coming together again but were not going to work on an album, instead would concentrate on singles. Keenan on a live radio show said that new material was going to be released soon. The Twitter updates of band members in 2010 confirmed that they were working on new music and would start touring again.
